In this openly theatrical play, a Chorus is our storyteller and guide to the reign of King Henry V and the battle of Agincourt. Henry regrets that Prince Hal, his own son and heir, does not match Hotspur’s prowess. Having deposed King Richard II, Henry Bolingbroke (now King Henry IV) discusses with his court the recent fighting against the Welsh and Scots, as a result of which Henry Percy (nicknamed Hotspur) has refused to yield up his prisoners. This production by Shakespeare Festival Saint Louis is a confluence of William Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part 1 and Henry IV Part 2 into one play. For example, let’s look at the opening paragraph of the first chapter: I find myself thinking of ways the story could have been made more interesting. No conversations show up in those pages, just paragraphs of information dumping. I am not a reader who pays close attention to the technical aspects of a story, so it is pretty telling when the first thing I notice about this story is that the first five pages of this story are all telling and no showing. All of the early editions of the play are anonymous, despite Kyd being alive for the 1592 (and possibly the 1594) edition. The Spanish Tragedy entered the Stationer’s Register in 1592 and quarto one was printed in the same year. It’s also one of the earliest English revenge tragedies. It is a difficult play to date and scholars usually give a date range between 15 for the play’s composition. The Spanish Tragedy, or Hieronimo is Mad Again is an Elizabethan tragedy written by Thomas Kyd. A few weeks ago, I mentioned that one of my favourite early modern tragedies was Thomas Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy and I thought I’d do a whole post about it today. Genres: Christian Fiction, Historical Fiction, Romance Jill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History, Harvard College Professor, and chair of Harvard's History and Literature Program. With These Truths, Lepore has produced a book that will shape our view of American history for decades to come. “A nation born in contradiction… will fight, forever, over the meaning of its history,” Lepore writes, but engaging in that struggle by studying the past is part of the work of citizenship. To answer that question, Lepore wrestles with the state of American politics, the legacy of slavery, the persistence of inequality, and the nature of technological change. These Truths tells this uniquely American story, beginning in 1492, asking whether the course of events over more than five centuries has proven the nation’s truths, or belied them. But has the nation, and democracy itself, delivered on that promise? The American experiment rests on three ideas-“these truths,” Jefferson called them-political equality, natural rights, and the sovereignty of the people. Widely hailed for its “sweeping, sobering account of the American past” ( New York Times Book Review), Jill Lepore’s one-volume history of America places truth itself-a devotion to facts, proof, and evidence-at the center of the nation’s history.
